CanWeld Conference Student Attendee Award

Professional development and networking for post-secondary students


The CanWeld Conference Award program, sponsored and administered by the CWA Foundation, was founded in 2014 in order to provide funding for full time College or University students pursuing a career in welding to attend the CWA Annual CanWeld Conference.

To be eligible to apply for the award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a minimum of 19 years of age prior to the conference date;
  2. Be enrolled, or have graduated from a one, two or three year welding technology program within one year of the conference date;
  3. Be enrolled, or have graduated from a 4 year welding engineering / engineering program with welding focus undergraduate program within two years of the conference date;
  4. Be a full-time graduate student currently pursuing research paths in welding and joining at the masters or PhD level;
  5. Have a minimum overall average of 80% in the program in which they are enrolled or have graduated.

Selected applicants will have the following expenses related to their attendance at the Conference included:

  1. Return ground transportation from the applicant’s residence to the airport, train station or bus station - excluding car rental.
  2. Return economy return airfare to the city and province of the Conference.
  3. Return economy train or bus fares to the city and province of the Conference.
  4. Return ground transportation fees from the airport, train or bus station to the Conference and return excluding car rental. Attendee must take Hotel shuttle if available.
  5. Standard hotel accommodation at the Conference host hotel or a nearby location.
  6. Conference registration fees.
  7. Meals outside of those provided by the Conference during travel at a rate of $10/breakfast, $15/lunch, and $25.00/dinner plus 15% gratuity and applicable taxes. ALL REQUESTS FOR REIMBURSEMENT MUST INCLUDE BOTH A COPY OF THE MEAL SELECTION RECEIPT AND THE METHOD OF PAYMENT RECEIPT. The Foundation cannot refund without both of these receipts.

The following expenses are specifically excluded from the award:

  1. Any expenses related to the purchase of alcoholic beverages, unless complimentary as part of the Conference program.
  2. Any expenses related to any accompanying guest or spouse.
  3. Any expenses for social / recreational activities not included in the Conference registration fee.

Expenses will be prepaid by the CWA Foundation where applicable and feasible. Any pre-approved expenses paid for by the recipient must be accompanied by the original receipt and provided within 14 days of the conclusion of the conference in order to receive reimbursement. The CWA Foundation will reimburse any approved expenses within 30 days of submission by the recipient.

The CWA Foundation has the right to refuse any claim/receipt that is not within the stated inclusions.

Award recipients will be permitted to arrive the day prior to the start of the conference and depart the evening of the conclusion of the conference, or the day immediately following the conclusion of the conference based on transportation availability.

Any exceptions to the above criteria must be approved by the Executive Director.

Selection of recipients for the award will be made by the Executive Director based on a combination of the applicant’s academic performance and their 500 word (minimum) essay prepared as Word document, Times Roman 12 pt, double spaced. Weighting of the criteria is as follows:

Academic standing 25
Strength of essay in describing desired reasons for attending 25
Strength of essay in describing personal challenges to attendance 20
Strength of essay in describing the scope of interest in the industry 15
Industry or school involvement and accomplishments 10
Overall essay – grammatically correct, free of errors 5

All applicants must confirm their agreement with the following expectations should they be a recipient of the award:

  • Recipients must agree to be publically acknowledged and recognized at the Conference to Conference delegates and guests. This may include published information such as the Conference program.
  • Recipients must agree to include their name and photograph in any internal and/or external communications or marketing collateral that the CWA Foundation deems appropriate.
  • Within 30 days of the completion of the Conference, recipients must prepare an article describing their experience at the conference or participate in an interview with the CWA Foundation. The CWA Foundation will have exclusive rights for the publication of this article, and may edit for content and/or length.
